NTC Thermistors

NTC Thermistors: Precise Temperature Sensing with alfatec

As an engineer, technician, or purchaser, you know that accurate temperature measurement and monitoring are critical in countless applications.

NTC thermistors (Negative Temperature Coefficient) are often the first choice.

alfatec GmbH & Co. KG offers high-quality NTC temperature sensors - especially from our partner Sunlord—that stand out for their precision, reliability, and excellent price-performance ratio.

What Is an NTC Thermistor?

An NTC thermistor, also known as a negative temperature coefficient resistor, is a temperature-dependent resistor.

Its defining characteristic is that its electrical resistance decreases as temperature increases. Conversely, resistance increases as temperature decreases. This behavior is typically nonlinear and follows a specific NTC curve

This property makes NTCs ideal for applications requiring precise temperature detection or temperature compensation in circuits. They are typically made from sintered metal oxides (ceramic materials), with the composition determining their specific resistance and temperature characteristics.

Benefits and Features of NTC Thermistors
High sensitivity: Strong resistance change with small temperature variations.
Cost-efficiency: Often more affordable than RTDs or thermocouples.
Variety: Available in many shapes, resistance values, and curves.
Simple interfacing: Easily evaluated using voltage divider circuits.
Fast response time: Especially for SMD types.
Application Areas
Temperature measurement & control: Household appliances (refrigerators, ovens, air conditioners, washing machines), Industrial process control, HVAC systems, Medical devices (thermometers, dialysis machines)
Temperature compensation: Oscillator stabilization (TCXOs), LCD compensation, Semiconductor protection
Inrush current limiting (ICL): Special NTCs with high cold resistance limit inrush current in power supplies, motors, or transformers. As they heat up, resistance drops, minimizing power loss.
Liquid level sensors
Battery management systems
Automotive electronics (engine control, climate systems, seat heating)

Technical Parameters: NTC Curve and Key Values

To select the right NTC for your application, the following parameters are essential:

  • Nominal Resistance (R25): Resistance at 25°C. alfatec offers a wide range, e.g., R25 = 4.7 kΩ to 225 kΩ.
  • B-Constant (B-Value): Describes the steepness of the NTC curve over a temperature range (e.g., B25/50, B25/85). Higher B-values indicate greater resistance change per °C. Typical values range from 3380 K to 4350 K.
  • Tolerance (R25 and B): Indicates allowable deviation (e.g., ±1%, ±3%, ±5%). Tighter tolerances enable more precise measurements.
  • Operating Temperature Range: e.g., -40°C to +150°C, depending on the application.
  • Power Dissipation: Maximum power the NTC can handle without excessive self-heating.
  • Package Sizes: Available from 0402 to 2012 and beyond.

NTC Thermistor Types: Versatility for Every Application

NTC thermistors come in various form factors to meet the needs of different applications:

  • SMD NTC Thermistors (Chip Type): Surface-mount components ideal for automated PCB assembly. They are compact and offer fast response times. alfatec primarily offers high-quality multilayer chip types from Sunlord.
  • Lead-Type (Radial or Axial): These through-hole components are ideal for applications requiring higher power dissipation or mechanical robustness. Common in power supplies, industrial equipment, and HVAC systems.
  • Glass-Encapsulated NTCs: Designed for harsh environments, these thermistors offer excellent moisture resistance and long-term stability. Suitable for automotive, medical, and outdoor applications.
  • Epoxy-Coated NTCs: Cost-effective and widely used in consumer electronics and household appliances.
  • NTC Probes and Assemblies: Integrated into housings or cables for easy installation in temperature-critical environments such as HVAC ducts, battery packs, or fluid tanks.

If you require specific shapes or leaded variants, alfatec will help you find the right solution.
