Wire-Wound Chip Beads: High Current, Superior EMI Performance

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is critical for reliability and performance of electronic assemblies.

Unwanted high-frequency noise can interfere with the operation of sensitive circuits. Wire-wound chip beads - also known as wire-wound SMD chip beads - suppress such interferences.

alfatec GmbH & Co. KG offers these components from the manufacturer Sunlord, providing reliable solutions for EMI filtering

What Are Wire-Wound Chip Beads?

Wire-wound chip beads are passive SMD (Surface Mount Device) components primarily used to suppress high-frequency noise on power- or signal-lines. They belong to the family of inductors or chokes

Around a ferrite core, a fine wire is wound. This construction distinguishes them from multilayer chip beads, which are manufactured using LTCC (Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic) technology. The wire-wound structure enables specific electrical characteristics suited for demanding applications.

Functionality: A chip bead acts as a frequency-dependent resistor (impedance). At low frequencies (e.g., DC or signal frequencies), it presents very low resistance and has minimal impact on the signal. At high frequencies (noise), its impedance increases sharply, effectively attenuating the noise and converting it into heat, while allowing the desired signal to pass through largely unaffected.

Technical Parameters and Materials

alfatec offers wire-wound chip beads from Sunlord, known for their quality and performance. Key technical parameters include:

  • Impedance (Z) @ Frequency: Measured in ohms (Ω), typically at 100 MHz. Indicates how effectively the bead attenuates high-frequency signals. Sunlord offers beads with impedance values ranging from a few ohms to several kilo-ohms.
  • Rated Current (IR): The maximum continuous DC current the bead can handle without damage or significant performance degradation. Wire-wound beads typically support higher currents than multilayer types, making them ideal for high-current applications.
  • DC Resistance (DCR): The ohmic resistance of the winding, measured in ohms or milliohms. A low DCR minimizes voltage drop and power loss—especially important in power lines.
  • Self-Resonant Frequency (SRF): The frequency at which the parasitic capacitance of the winding resonates with its inductance. Above this frequency, the bead behaves capacitively, reducing its filtering effectiveness.

Materials:

  • Core: High-quality ferrite materials optimized for specific frequency ranges and performance.
  • Winding: Enamel-coated copper wire.
  • Terminals: Tin-plated for reliable soldering in SMD processes.

Sunlord attaches great importance to material quality and precise manufacturing processes in order to ensure consistent electrical properties and high reliability of its inductors.
