What Is a PFC Choke and Why Is It Important?
In modern electronic devices- especially in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) - nonlinear current draw often leads to unwanted phase shifts between current and voltage, as well as the generation of harmonics. This results in a poor power factor (PF) and increased reactive power. A low power factor means more apparent power is drawn from the grid than is actually used as real power. This unnecessarily burdens the power grid, increases energy costs, and may lead to non-compliance with standards such as EN 61000-3-2.
This is where the PFC choke (also known as compensation choke, reactive power choke, PFC inductor, or PFC coil) comes into play. As the central inductor in a PFC circuit, it stores energy in a magnetic field and releases it to shape the input current, keeping it as sinusoidal and in phase with the input voltage as possible. These chokes significantly improve the power factor (often >0.95), reduce harmonics, and increase overall system efficiency.
