Ceramic Multilayer Inductors: Compact RF Performance

Reliable passive components are key to success in modern electronics development. Especially in the high-frequency (RF) domain, the search for high-performance and space-saving components is challenging. alfatec GmbH & Co. KG supports you as a competent partner with years of experience in high-quality electronic components and helps you find the right solution.

Our portfolio includes a wide range of inductors - including multilayer ceramic inductors (MLCI) from our renowned partner Sunlord. These components stand out for their compact design and excellent performance, making them ideal for demanding applications.

Multi Layer Ceramic Inductor

Multilayer Inductors: What Defines Ceramic Multilayer Inductors?

Multilayer ceramic inductors - often referred to as MLCIs - belong to the category of surface-mount device (SMD) inductors. Their structure is based on multilayer technology, similar to that of MLCCs (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors), but optimized for inductance. Conductive coil patterns - typically made of silver or copper - are printed onto thin ceramic or ferrite-based dielectric layers. These layers are stacked, pressed, and sintered at high temperatures to form a monolithic structure.

In contrast, wire-wound inductors use a wire wound around a core (e.g., ferrite or ceramic). While wire-wound types often offer higher quality factors (Q) and saturation currents, ceramic multilayer inductors offer:

  • Extremely compact form factors
  • Excellent suitability for high frequencies
  • Good temperature stability
  • Cost-efficiency in high-volume production

Technical Parameters & Construction Types: A Closer Look

When selecting the right inductor, several technical parameters are critical:

  • Inductance (L): Nominal value measured in nanohenries (nH) or microhenries (µH), indicating the ability to store energy in a magnetic field. alfatec covers the range from 0.2 nH to 680 nH.
  • Quality factor (Q): A measure of inductor efficiency. A high Q means low losses, especially important in RF circuits.
  • Self-resonant frequency (SRF): The frequency at which the inductor’s parasitic capacitance resonates with its inductance. Above the SRF, the component behaves capacitively. MLCIs typically have high SRFs.
  • DC resistance (DCR): The ohmic resistance of internal conductors. A low DCR minimizes power loss, especially relevant for higher currents (e.g., in DC/DC converters).
  • Rated current: The maximum continuous current (typically DC) the inductor can carry without overheating or significant inductance change—up to 1000 mA in our portfolio.

Construction types compared:

  • Multilayer Ceramic Inductors (MLCI): Ideal for RF filtering, impedance matching, and decoupling in space-constrained applications. The multilayer structure enables ultra-compact sizes.
  • Wire-wound inductors: Often preferred for higher inductance values, higher currents, and higher Q factors, typically in larger packages.
