Understanding Hybrid Capacitors – The Best of Both Worlds
Hybrid capacitors combine the strengths of traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors and polymer capacitors.
Like conventional aluminum electrolytics, they feature an anode made of etched aluminum foil with a thin oxide layer formed by anodic oxidation, serving as the dielectric. The key difference lies in the cathode system: a combination of conductive polymer and liquid electrolyte.
- Conductive Polymer: Provides excellent conductivity, resulting in very low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and high ripple current capability.
- Liquid Electrolyte: Enhances voltage endurance and enables self-healing of minor dielectric defects, improving reliability and lifespan.
This combination results in capacitors with outstanding electrical performance across a wide temperature range.
