Thermal Interface Materials: Efficient Thermal Management for Electronics
The miniaturization and increasing power density of modern electronics pose significant challenges for heat dissipation. Without effective thermal management, heat can drastically shorten the lifespan of electronic components or even lead to failure.
Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are essential in this context. They bridge microscopic air gaps between heat-generating components (e.g., processors, LEDs) and heat sinks, reducing thermal resistance and enabling optimized heat transfer. Selecting the right material is fundamental for maintaining stable operating temperatures and ensuring system reliability.
alfatec GmbH & Co. KG, in partnership with Kerafol, offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality thermal interface materials and solutions. This supports engineers, technicians, and purchasers in effectively addressing thermal challenges and developing future-proof electronics.
Fundamentals: What Thermal Interface Materials Must Deliver
TIMs optimize heat transfer between a heat source (e.g., semiconductor) and a heat sink. They fill microscopic voids that would otherwise act as thermal insulators, thereby maximizing thermal conductivity.
Many of these materials also provide electrical insulation to prevent short circuits. By efficiently dissipating heat, TIMs ensure stable operating temperatures, significantly enhancing component lifespan, performance, and system reliability. They are indispensable in modern electronics.

KERATHERM® Thermal Interface Films: Insulation & Conductivity
KERATHERM® thermal interface films from Kerafol are versatile workhorses in thermal management. They combine high thermal conductivity with excellent electrical insulation, making them ideal for applications requiring safe electrical separation between components and heat sinks.
The range includes various types with different technical parameters. Options include fiberglass reinforcement for increased mechanical stability and single-sided adhesive coatings for easier mounting. Silicone-free variants are also available for applications where silicone contamination must be avoided.
Applications: Power electronics (e.g., IGBTs, MOSFETs), automotive control units, LED lighting, telecommunications.
Graphite Films S 900: Hot Spot Cooling & Heat Spreading
These films, made from pure, highly compressed natural graphite, conduct heat anisotropically: extremely efficiently in-plane (>300 W/mK) and 7.5 W/mK through-plane. Note: they are electrically conductive.
Key Advantages:
- High temperature resistance: -40 °C to +500 °C (also in vacuum)
- Lightweight: Up to 30% weight savings compared to copper/aluminum at equivalent thermal performance
- Flexibility, chemical resistance, and flame retardancy (UL-94 V-0)
Applications: Heat spreaders in smartphones, laptops, LEDs, power electronics, and automotive systems.
Thermally Conductive Adhesive Tapes: Silicone-Free & Efficient
Kerafol offers silicone-free, thermally conductive adhesive tapes based on acrylic. These combine bonding, thermal conduction, and insulation in one product—ideal for process optimization by eliminating mechanical fasteners. They offer strong adhesion, low thermal resistance (e.g., 1.4 W/mK), and reliable electrical insulation (up to 6.0 kV). Available as sheets or die-cut parts.
Applications: Cooling of processors, power semiconductors, LEDs, and electronics in automotive, consumer, and telecom sectors.
Product Overview & Key Features
The following table provides a quick overview of the main features of the thermal interface materials offered by alfatec and related products from Kerafol, enabling quick comparison and guidance for selecting the right material.
| Product Category | Material Base | Thermal Conductivity (W/mK) | Electrically insulating? | Primary Advantage / Application Area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KERATHERM® Thermal Films | Silicone, Polyurethane, Epoxy (PEEK) | 1.1 - 6.5 | Yes | High insulation, precise gap filling, versatile |
| Graphite Films (Kerafol S 900) | Natural Graphite | 7.5 (Z) / >300 (X/Y) | No (conductive) | Extreme heat spreading, hot spot cooling, lightweight, high temp. |
| Thermally Conductive Tapes | Acrylic | 1.3 - 1.4 | Yes | Silicone-free, easy mounting, bonding & cooling, electrical insulation |
This overview highlights that material selection depends heavily on application-specific requirements. The distinction between electrically conductive graphite films and insulating materials is critical in design.
While graphite films offer unmatched heat spreading, they require careful consideration of electrical properties. Insulating materials, on the other hand, provide safe separation and are essential for applications requiring electrical safety.
