Thyristors & diodes
Two basic semiconductor components used in power electronics to control and convert electrical energy are the thyristor and the diode. The diode enables current to flow in one direction only, whereas the thyristor is a switchable semiconductor component that enables current to flow in the forward direction, but only allows this after a control pulse at the gate. Diodes are used as rectifiers, freewheeling diodes and in protective circuits; thyristors are used to control motors and lamps, as well as for power control in inverters and for rectifying alternating current.
