What is a MOSFET? Basics of Field-Effect Transistors

A MOSFET is a voltage-controlled field-effect transistor that plays a key role in power electronics and signal processing. Unlike bipolar transistors, which are current-controlled, the current flow between the Drain (D) and Source (S) terminals in a MOSFET is controlled by applying a voltage to the Gate (G). This control is achieved through an insulating oxide layer, resulting in a very high input impedance and requiring minimal control power. This makes MOSFETs ideal for interfacing with microcontrollers and other logic circuits.

Advantages of MOSFETs over Other Transistors
High Switching Speed: Thanks to their voltage-controlled nature and low internal capacitance, MOSFETs achieve very high switching frequencies.
Low Drive Power: The insulated gate requires very little current to operate, simplifying the driver stage.
High Efficiency: Modern MOSFETs feature low on-resistance (RDS(on)), leading to minimal power losses: We offer modules starting at 1.1mOhm RDS(on) and discrete types at 8mOhm RDS(on).
Good Thermal Stability: Compared to bipolar transistors, they are generally more robust against thermal runaway.
Scalability: MOSFET technology scales well across different voltage and current classes.
While IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) may offer advantages at very high voltages and currents, MOSFETs are often the more efficient choice for low to medium power levels and high frequencies.

Functionality: Enhancement and Depletion Types Explained

MOSFETs generally come in two main variants, which describe the state of the conductive channel without gate voltage:

  • Enhancement Mode: This is the most common type. Without gate voltage, no current flows between drain and source (channel is off). Only when a sufficient gate voltage is applied are charge carriers "enhanced" in the channel region, creating a conductive path and allowing current flow.
  • Depletion Mode: This type has a conductive channel even without gate voltage. Current flow can be reduced or completely blocked by applying a negative (for n-channel) or positive (for p-channel) gate voltage, which "depletes" the charge carriers from the channel.

The choice of type depends heavily on the specific application and desired circuit logic.

Our MOSFET Portfolio: Si and SiC Solutions from alfatec

alfatec offers a wide range of MOSFETs tailored to your specific requirements. Our product portfolio includes two main categories:

1. SiC MOSFETs (Silicon Carbide MOSFETs): For applications requiring top-tier performance, we offer Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs. These power transistors leverage the advantages of the wide-bandgap semiconductor material silicon carbide to deliver significant improvements:

  • Higher Breakdown Voltage: Enables use in high-voltage applications.
  • Higher Operating Temperatures: Greater thermal robustness.
  • Faster Switching Speed: Reduces switching losses and allows for smaller passive components.
  • Lower Losses: Leads to higher system efficiency.

SiC MOSFETs are the ideal choice for demanding areas such as e-mobility (chargers, inverters), renewable energy (solar inverters), industrial drives, and high-performance power supplies.

2. Si MOSFETs (Silicon MOSFETs): Our Silicon (Si) MOSFETs are the proven choice in countless electronic applications. They offer excellent value for money and are available in a wide range of packages, voltage, and current classes. These transistors are ideal for:

  • Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS)
  • DC/DC Converters
  • Motor Control
  • Relay Drivers
  • General Switching Applications in Industrial and Consumer Electronics
