  • Power switches: Typically IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) or Si MOSFETs (Silicon Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors).

  • Protective functions: Integrated protective circuitry against overcurrent, short circuit, undervoltage of the supply voltage, and overtemperature.
  • Optional components: Depending on the module, free-wheeling diodes, temperature sensors, or other logic functions may also be integrated.

Technical excellence: Important IPM parameters

Several technical parameters are crucial when selecting the right IPM:

  • Blocking voltage (Vces / Vds): The maximum voltage that the module can withstand in the blocked state.
  • Collector current / drain current (Ic / Id): The maximum continuous current that the power switches can carry.
  • Switching frequency: The range in which the module can be operated efficiently.
  • Supply voltage (Vcc): The voltage range for the internal logic and gate drivers.
  • Integrated protection functions: Type and thresholds of the protection circuitry, such as overcurrent detection, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and overtemperature protection (OT).
  • Thermal resistance: A measure of how well heat is dissipated from the semiconductor chip to the heat sink – crucial for thermal design.
  • Materials: The power semiconductors are based on silicon (Si). The housing and substrate materials – often ceramics such as Al2O3 or AlN on DBC substrate – are optimized for insulation and heat dissipation.
