Technical Characteristics of This Diode Type

The Si diode is based on the semiconductor material silicon. Doping with foreign atoms creates regions with different charge carrier concentrations (p-type and n-type). At the junction of these regions - the pn-junction - an electric field forms that blocks current in reverse bias. In forward bias, charge carriers can overcome this barrier, allowing current to flow. 

Semiconductors like silicon are the heart of modern electronics. Their ability to control electrical current enables a wide range of electronic devices and applications. In addition to silicon, other semiconductor materials such as germanium and gallium arsenide are used in specialized applications. 

Key technical parameters of Si diodes include: 

  • Forward Voltage (VF): The voltage drop across the diode when operated in forward direction. 
  • Reverse Voltage (VR): The maximum voltage that can be applied in reverse direction without damaging the diode. 
  • Forward Current (IF): The maximum current that can flow through the diode in forward direction. 
  • Reverse Current (IR): The current that flows through the diode in reverse direction. 
  • Switching Frequency: The frequency at which the diode can switch between conducting and blocking states. 
  • Switching Losses: Energy losses that occur during the switching process. 

The reverse voltage is a critical parameter for the safety and reliability of a semiconductor diode. Exceeding this value can damage or destroy the diode.
